Potty Training Our Puppy. Is it wearing you out?

Here is some valuable, common sense advice to shorten the process…

Im going to tell you about the two biggest mistakes people make when attempting to potty train their puppy… and if you eliminate both mistakes I PROMISE you that your puppy will be potty trained QUICKLY!

Mistake #1

When I potty train puppies I have several different options available to manage where my puppy is and what they are doing:

You allow your puppy to free roam your house. Your puppy will have their whole life to wander your home… after being potty trained (and teaching good house manners too!) If your puppy is wandering around unattended, distracted, and doesn’t know where their potty area is yet, then how would you expect them to let you know when they have to potty?

When I potty train puppies I have several different options available to manage where my puppy is and what they are doing:

  1. In a crate.
  2. In a pen.
  3. On leash while I hold them next to me.
  4. In my arms.

That’s it for now.  A puppy wandering your home is not considered exercise and not a form of proper self entertainment… free roaming is how your puppy learns to go potty wherever they want and will also eventually lead to other problems like inappropriate chewing and other boredom behaviors.    So now you have a dog that poops in your house daily, goes to your closet and chews your shoes and doesn’t know how to be okay with confinement or restrictions (good luck with boarding or traveling in the future

My goal is to be accident free day by day!

Puppies between 8-12 weeks old should be taken out to pee at least 8-12x a day. And most puppies will poop 3-5x a day. If your puppy is wandering around unattended, distracted, and doesn’t know where their potty area is yet, then how would you expect them to let you know when they have to potty?

Mistake #2

Not enough potty breaks and reinforcement opportunities!
